Description

This is a promo piece I made for my band, Static Limit. We're using it for shirts, stickers, posters, etc. on our Cafepress store. Took about two weeks to complete with PS.

Fun picture!

The first and main thing I spotted was your mistake on perspective. For both the monsters and the hero you've used separate horizon lines, at least 3 of them and maybe more. First thing you should always do is set your Horizon line so you know how objects sit in relation to it/eachother and fit in the scene. This mistake happens easily if you move things around in photoshop to adjust composition.

Second is the abuse of fonts. You've selected some really great ones to fit, but you used a bit too much variaty in type and size.

I bet this would kick ass done in a Vector program. Seems to suit that style a bit more than PS. All in all nice work.

i think the fonts work well as an homage to those "great" 50's sci-fi movie posters

Nerfherder, you're right. As much as I wanted to nail this piece, time constraints (and fellow band mates) were constantly over my shoulder and pushing me to "hurry up." I made the huge mistake of drawing all the figures separately, scanning, then arranging them into a composition that has plenty of problems. Then again, mistakes is how we learn.

As far as the fonts, Shadowhead hit the nail on the head. I know the no-more-than-two-families rule of fonts, but when researching old sci-fi posters, those artists weren't exactly playing by the same rules. Believe me, if this was a graphic design job, you couldn't pay me to use so many fonts(well, maybe if the price was right ).

Thanks for your input guys. This was not a very serious piece and I knew I could get away with some shortcomings without much pain. Thanks again for the c&c!
